Nematospora coryli is a yeast-like ascomycete causing “yeast spot” in beans or “kernel spot” in hazelnuts. Infection occurs primarily through insect transmission that introduces the pathogen into developing beans or nuts, leading to internal discoloration and quality loss; seed transmission has not been demonstrated and is not considered an important pathway in its epidemiology.

Nematospora coryli is associated with yeast spot disease of soybean seeds. Infection occurs primarily through piercing–sucking insects, especially stink bugs, which introduce the fungus during feeding on developing pods, leading to internal seed discoloration, shriveling, and reduced seed quality. Although one source (Björklund, N., & Boberg, J., 2022) mentioned spread by seed, no supporting evidence or observations were presented, and no additional references substantiate seed as a natural pathway for this pathogen.

Nematospora coryli is associated with yeast spot–like symptoms on seed and is introduced primarily through piercing–sucking insect injury. Although some sources (RICH/ISTA) list the pathogen as seed-borne, they also indicate that the fungus is a common invader of insect-punctured seed rather than a true seed-borne pathogen. No evidence was found demonstrating seed as a pathway.
