Phoma apiicola is a fungal pathogen of celery that causes rot of petiole bases, crowns, and roots. It produces characteristic pycnidia in infected tissue, survives in soil and plant debris, and can potentially be seed-borne, though seed transmission remains uncertain.

Phoma apiicola is primarily considered a soil- and debris-borne pathogen of celery; however, seed as a pathway remains uncertain. The only direct experimental evidence comes from Brett (1939), and although dated, no studies have disproven it. Modern seed health programs (e.g., ISHI-Veg/ISTA) still recognize P. apiicola as detectable on celery seed, while more recent literature focuses largely on debris-borne survival rather than re-examining seed transmission.
