Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola spreads primarily within crops over short distances and can survive on crop debris and weeds, though the role of weeds is less clear. Long-distance dispersal occurs mainly via infected rice seeds, making seed transmission the primary means of spread. The bacterium enters leaves through stomata or wounds and is favored by rain, high humidity, and irrigation water.
